For a very special Sunday Deep Dive, since it’s my 42nd year on this earth Tuesday, we are doing a special dive into the best whisky I have found on this earth. Bruichladdich Black Art 8.1. Thank you so much to my tasting group ( the Whiskey Dicks) for gifting me this bottle. This 26 year old scotch is sitting at 45.1% abv. Limited to 12,000 bottles world wide, and I have one. 😳This one fills my cup in so many ways. Let’s get into it, this might be a long one so hold on! On the nose vanilla cream, mixed with a honey suckle, toffee, granola, mixed with a slight brine like salted caramel. I could live in this nose, and have for longer than I care to admit. On the taste it’s a malty sweetness of berries and cream , a tannic vanilla, orange marmalade, and sugar cookie. On the finish, Concord grape jam, malt sweetness , crème brûlée with a cherry topping. And a couple minutes after a peach cobbler (not the cake one but the crust one. With a sugar topping and super sticky). This whisky goes on for days and the longer I sit with it the more notes I get. I know this is a very rare whisky to come by, but if you do I don’t care how much it costs it’s worth it! This is a super fun tasting for me because I get to drink a super cool whisky. And it’s so complex that if I reviewed it in an hour it would have different results. Please take this as a challenge to try new and some times expensive things, it’s usually worth it. Hey guys let’s use this Sunday Deep Dive to get into a rye whiskey. I have been trying to get into rye for a while now and have found some cool bottles and drams. Tonite we dive into Michters Single Barrel Rye, Barrel 22b368. Bottled at a strange 42.4%. This single barrel is becoming more available in Texas. From what I can tell this is a sourced whiskey (probably from Old Forester). Either way let’s get into it. On the nose: fresh cut grass, mixed with a salty sea spray, a bit of dill from a nearby garden, and a hint of clove. On the pallet, it’s a slight anise and mint, followed by a vanilla and graham cracker, and then the taste of dill peaks around. On the finish: clove, toffee, a bit of spiced apple, and long finish is a bit of granola. I bought this as a tasting treat for people and then after opening found it had some good qualities but with the low proof, and basic flavor profile found it kinda blah. And for a single barrel you want different, and this might be just this barrel. Idk. But it’s lacking complexity, and depth. I have had much better rye whiskeys, it’s not horrible, but it’s a single barrel so you don’t wanna mix it. I’m gonna save a sample of this because I got a mystery box from @keg&bottle and it had another bottle of this in it so I will see how it changes. Time for another Sunday deep dive. Tonite we go head first into a quintessential scotch. Glenmorangie The Quinta Ruban Port Cask Finished, this 14 year old beauty is aged in first fill bourbon casks then finished in ruby port barrels. Did you know that Glenmorangie has the tallest still in Scotland? On the nose is a floral honeysuckle, an orange marmalade, light tobacco and chocolate. On the pallet I get a malted strawberry, almost like a nutrigrain bar, a bit of allspice, and a semisweet chocolate with a hint of citrus. On the finish; a sweet caramel toffee, velvet smooth, linger for about 2 minutes. This whisky is what scotch is all about and at 46% abv it drinks like a lot less. So lovely! All right for this Sunday’s Deep Dive we are cracking into Sloppy Poncho from The Crowded Barrel. This straight bourbon whiskey is not only small batch, but hand crafted as well. This limited release whiskey is a Texas tradition with a long standing heritage and generations of recipes. But on a serious note this whiskey is sourced from Giant Gulf Coast Distilling in the Houston area. This wheated bourbon is a great pour by itself but also does very well in a cocktail. On the nose: cut grass and hay barn, vanilla and brown sugar. On the pallet: it offers honey, and graham cracker, with some caramel , and a ethanol ding with a bit of floral. On the finish: it’s all sweet corn bread, and cut grass again. I know that this bourbon isn’t the oldest, but it is lively and punchy where you need it, and at 46% it won’t kill you with the proof. I don’t know if @crowdedbarrel are shipping this one yet but if your around ATX check them out! Super cool since it’s the world’s first crowd sourced distillery. Welcome back to another Sunday Deep Dive. Tonite we are breaking into Connemara Peated Irish Whiskey. I know all you bourbon people out there are gonna pass by, but this young lad is a subtle ease into smoky whiskey. Follow me on this flavor journey. Bottled at 40%, so very approchable and dare I say smooth. On the nose it’s very honey, apple drizzled with sugar, peaches and cream, and a floral sweetness similar to honeysuckle. On the taste it is much of the same, take peaches or apples, pour some honey on them and put them in your smoker on low for a bit. The smoke is light and ashy but not in an off putting way, like someone smoking a cigar close by but not in your face. On the finish, the smoke gives way to a vanilla cream, almost orange marmalade. Pipe tobacco and tart apple. This is a very unique Irish whiskey, and whiskey in general. If you’re getting into smoky whiskey, or love the Irish pot still style, this is a great find if available. In the near future I will do a comparison between this bottle (3 year) and the 12 year version. So look for that soon! As always keep your spirits up!

Welcome to another Sunday Deep Dive. This week we go into a Rye close to home, like super close! The Luckenbach Road Whiskey Distillery Rye Whiskey. 2 year old, bottled at 44% abv., and sourced from Indiana. I can’t wait for more people to get ahold of the super cool things this place is doing. Got to meet fellow Whiskey Somm Emma at the Texas Whiskey Fest, and seeing the love that everyone gave them there just showed me a glimpse of what’s to come in the very near future. On the nose; a very light mint, pumpernickel bread and caramel, a hint of anise and cinnamon. On the taste there’s a honey black tea , spiced apple, baking spice but very light. This is the easiest drinking rye I have had in a while. On the finish it leaves you with the tannic tea note and a light prickle on your tongue, and long in the finish a thin mint cookie. This rye is super good, and if it’s anything like what they are going to make when there fully up and running full steam, I think we all need to watch out. Another good thing is they are shipping all over as of now. So you should be able to find at least a couple of there products. My hope is in the future maybe a Whiskey Shaman barrel pick.
